I've been feeling lately that I need to do more service for people that REALLY need it. I'm thinking about people in other parts of the world that don't have the necessities and luxuries that we have here in the US. I'm at a loss at where to begin even looking for something to do. I want to serve in a meaningful way--more than just writing a check (it would be great if my kids could be involved too). I want it to be a reputable organization so I don't have to worry that too much is being spent to pay people and not enough is being spent on the people in need. Does anyone know where to look or how to research organizations once I find them? Do you have any personal experiences with charitable organizations either good or bad. I know I can look at the church welfare info, but I'd like some other options too. Thanks in advance for your help!

Jen - I loved the book "Three Cups of Tea" and wanted to help out his organization. He has a Pennies for Peace

might be fun way to collect change with your kids and then donate it. There's more info on the website. I might do this with my kids right now.
The Humanitarian program of the Church is excellent because you know it will go where needed and there are lots of options for projects.
Whoops, now I see that you already mentioned the Church. You might be able to do something with the orphanages some of our friends adopted from in Africa. In Houston, we had a lot of hospitals and they always had opportunities. You might check with Primary Childrens or other hospitals.
