The book I'm reading right now is called "A walk in the woods" by Bill Bryson It is about the authors experience walking the Appalachian trail. He tells lots of background about the history of the trail and the changes that have happened to it over the years. He also talks about environmental issues too. There is a bit of swearing so if that offends you this book is probably not for you. It was somewhat entertaining, but it wasn't a book I couldn't put down.
Amazon's description: The Appalachian Trail trail stretches from Georgia to Maine and covers some of the most breathtaking terrain in America–majestic mountains, silent forests, sparking lakes. If you’re going to take a hike, it’s probably the place to go. And Bill Bryson is surely the most entertaing guide you’ll find. He introduces us to the history and ecology of the trail and to some of the other hardy (or just foolhardy) folks he meets along the way–and a couple of bears. Already a classic, A Walk in the Woods will make you long for the great outdoors (or at least a comfortable chair to sit and read in).

Once upon a time there was a young mother named Amberly whose baby Carter had never had a haircut. He had had a few trims over the first 2 years and 7 months of his life but these were tiny trims, the kind that no one can tell happened except the mama. Well Amberly's Grandma had died and everyone went to Utah for the funeral. While Amberly was preparing her talk for the funeral, the young father Jason (who knew better, I think) took Carter and his brother Ryan to get their hair trimmed. He returned and Carter's hair had been BUZZED OFF!!!!!!! Well the young mother was devasted and could not stop crying, she had to go into the other room so that Carter wouldn't see because it wasn't his fault after all. Well years later that same young mother looked at pictures taken shortly before the funeral and wondered what the heck was wrong with her that she let her 2 1/2 year old have hair so stinkin long. That's my story, I know it doesn't give a clear answer but it's all I have to offer. Good luck. :)
I LOVE the appalachian trail! The GA portion isn't too far from us. When we used to backpack, it was our favorite place to go. We've done about 30 miles of it (not much compared to the whole thing, but it is the most difficult stretch, and we didn't go all that often!)
