The Glass Castle

I recently finished this book. I didn't know much about it before I started reading, but it had gotten great reviews by some friends and so I thought I'd try it out...I'm so glad I did. It was a great read. I loved the humor that the author found in her very unusual upbringing. As crazy as her parents seemed in so many ways in other ways I think they were right on with how they taught their children to make the best of things and that they were extraordinary children. There were many things that happened in her life that were appalling to me, but she took them and learned and grew and decided that she wanted to be different. I liked the feeling I got from this book that no matter what your childhood was like you can choose to become a successful, happy person you aren't doomed to failure just because you started out with a rough life.

I loved this book, I thought despite the circumstances it was obvious that the dad loved them, even though he showd it in rather odd ways at times. You could see he fit that profile of genious/insanity.

PS. My cousin started a cooking blog and I knew you would be interested in it. www.givepeasachance2.blogspot.com You can check it out and leave your email and Erin can make you a co-author if you'd like, she wants everyone to leave at least 2 recipies a month if they want to.

I totally agree that you could tell the Dad (and the Mom) loved their kids, but I was amazed at the indifference they sometimes showed to the kind of lived they were making their children live...

One of my favorites. I love her non-judgmental perspective...she doesn't play the victim of her past, she just describes the situation, what she learned, and moves on. A good lesson for me.
